WCM: What inspired you to become a Naturopathic Physician?
CA: I have always been interested in medicine, but I like the connection and time that Naturopathic Medicine affords me. I was first introduced to alternative and complimentary medicine through a study abroad program called Semester at Sea. While completing a university semester on a ship that circumnavigated the globe, I was introduced to healing modalities from around the world. This inspired me to consider a medical career that followed a more holistic approach.
WCM: Tell us about how naturopathic and integrative medicine may help to treat recurring UTIs, chronic UTIs, IC and other bladder issues.
CA: Recurring UTIs, chronic UTIs, IC and other bladder concerns often involve more than just treating the bladder. Naturopathic medicine offers a broad approach that examines body systems and their interactions and how that results in particular symptoms. Chronic conditions - including bladder health concerns - can be rooted in underlying imbalances in the digestive or hormonal systems, or result from a deficiency in particular nutrients. Taking a holistic approach enables us to consider all possible contributing factors in order to treat the root cause.
WCM: What would someone expect from a first appointment with you?
CA: An appointment with me involves listening to your unique story, conducting a thorough health history, a focused physical exam and laboratory testing (if necessary). I will then recommend an individualized treatment plan that may include a combination of pharmaceutical drugs, herbs, acupuncture, diet and lifestyle counselling, IV therapy and nutritional supplementation. I feel that I play an important role as a teacher - educating and empowering you to achieve balance in your own life. I believe in integrating foundational scientific knowledge and modern research with the principles and philosophies of integrative medicine.
Thank you Dr. Akehurst for all that you do for your patients! It was great getting to know you and learning more about your practice.
